A native Clevelander, Alejandro V. Cortes grew up on Cleveland's
west side in the Cudell/ Edgewater neighborhood as one of seven
kids to Antonio and Maria Cortes. After graduating from St.
Ignatius High School, Alejandro decided to take his talents to the
East Coast and attend Boston College where he played for the men's
rugby team and earned a B.A. in History.
After graduating from BC, Alejandro attended The Ohio State
University Moritz College of Law. While in law school,
Alejandro was a staff member on the Ohio State Journal On Dispute
Resolution. His student note, The H-2A Farmworker:
The Latest Incarnation of the Judicially Handicapped and Why the
Use of Mediation to Resolve Employment Disputes Will Improve Their
Rights was selected for publication in the journal.
Alejandro also competed on the law school's First Amendment Moot
Court, and was named a Public Service Fellow for his volunteer
service to government and non-profit organizations. Outside
of the classroom, Alejandro was involved in many student
organizations, and was voted by his fellow classmates as the winner
of the John J. Adams Memorial Award for leadership and significant
contribution within the Moritz College of Law.
After graduating from law school, Alejandro moved back home to
Cleveland and accepted a job as an Assistant Director of Law for
the City of Cleveland. Currently, Alejandro is the Judicial
Staff Attorney for Judge Carolyn B. Friedland of the Cuyahoga
County Court of Common Pleas. As a judicial staff attorney,
Alejandro assists Judge Friedland with her civil docket. He
also provides the Judge with research and counsel on legal,
evidentiary, procedural, and discovery issues pending before the
court.
Alejandro and his wife Julie have lived in Cleveland's Warehouse
District for the past two years. Alex and Julie recently
welcomed their daughter Lucia to the family. In his spare
time, Alejandro sits on the Board of Directors for Cudell
Improvement, Inc., and is also actively involved with the St.
Ignatius High School Alumni Association. For the past six
years, Alejandro has also served as an assistant coach for the
Warrior Rugby Football Club, a high school team consisting of
students from St. Ignatius High School.
