A native Clevelander, Alejandro V. Cortes grew up on Cleveland's west side in the Cudell/ Edgewater neighborhood as one of seven kids to Antonio and Maria Cortes.  After graduating from St. Ignatius High School, Alejandro decided to take his talents to the East Coast and attend Boston College where he played for the men's rugby team and earned a B.A. in History.

After graduating from BC, Alejandro attended The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law.  While in law school, Alejandro was a staff member on the Ohio State Journal On Dispute Resolution.   His student note, The H-2A Farmworker: The Latest Incarnation of the Judicially Handicapped and Why the Use of Mediation to Resolve Employment Disputes Will Improve Their Rights was selected for publication in the journal.  Alejandro also competed on the law school's First Amendment Moot Court, and was named a Public Service Fellow for his volunteer service to government and non-profit organizations.  Outside of the classroom, Alejandro was involved in many student organizations, and was voted by his fellow classmates as the winner of the John J. Adams Memorial Award for leadership and significant contribution within the Moritz College of Law.

After graduating from law school, Alejandro moved back home to Cleveland and accepted a job as an Assistant Director of Law for the City of Cleveland.  Currently, Alejandro is the Judicial Staff Attorney for Judge Carolyn B. Friedland of the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas.  As a judicial staff attorney, Alejandro assists Judge Friedland with her civil docket.  He also provides the Judge with research and counsel on legal, evidentiary, procedural, and discovery issues pending before the court.

Alejandro and his wife Julie have lived in Cleveland's Warehouse District for the past two years.  Alex and Julie recently welcomed their daughter Lucia to the family.  In his spare time, Alejandro sits on the Board of Directors for Cudell Improvement, Inc., and is also actively involved with the St. Ignatius High School Alumni Association.  For the past six years, Alejandro has also served as an assistant coach for the Warrior Rugby Football Club, a high school team consisting of students from St. Ignatius High School.
