The Cadillac Ranch resides in what was formerly the May Company
department store that was built and expanded in the first twenty
years of the 20th century. Built by renowned architect
and planner Daniel H. Burnham, the May Company Building reflects
the architectural values of the City Beautiful movement popularized
by Burnham. Burnham designed Cleveland's "Group Plan" and Mall
(where the Medical Mart is now being constructed) and is perhaps
most noted for designing the White City, Chicago's 1893 Columbian
Exposition. The Euclid Avenue store eventually expanded to more
than one million square feet of interior space, making it the
largest in Ohio in 1931. In the 1950s, May Company began an
expansion into the suburbs, following the population's movement
away from the city. By 1979 the May Company had nine branches
throughout Northern Ohio. Shifting population and spending patterns
eventually force May Company and other Cleveland department stores
in Cleveland to curtail their downtown businesses, leading to their
closures in the 1980s and 1990s.
