Empowering Generations: Downtown Cleveland’s Black History Month Celebrations
This February, Downtown Cleveland is buzzing with celebrations, paying homage to the rich tapestry of Black history and culture.
Bedrock and #VoicesofCLE partner to celebrate black arts and culture throughout the month in Tower City with live mural painting, stage shows, crafts, and dance battles! The #VoicesofCLE Public Art Project provides a platform for expression and action while amplifying voices through the heart of Cleveland. Created through a collaboration between Ingenuity Cleveland, Downtown Cleveland, Inc., and partners, the #VoicesofCLE initiative has adorned facades and public spaces throughout the city center and beyond. Every Saturday this month, watch firsthand as artists paint murals in real-time across Tower City.
The Cleveland Cavaliers are set to host their 20th Annual Black Heritage Celebration (BHC), a platform honoring Black history and individuals who have positively impacted Cleveland’s and Northeast Ohio’s Black community. Themed "Empowering and Inspiring One Generation to the Next," this celebration underscores the commitment to recognizing influential figures. The exclusive Cavs BHC apparel and accessories, co-created by Cavs team members and John Carroll University’s Wayfinders program students, contribute to the NEW Cavaliers Community Foundation HBCU Scholarship Fund.
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, a beacon of music history, dives into the groundbreaking "Time's Up" album by Living Colour on Feb. 15 and hosts a screening of "Soul Train: The Hippest Trip in America" throughout the month at the Foster Theater. Dr. Laina Dawes will host a panel that explores the often contentious relationship between Black rock, heavy metal, punk and alternative musicians and Black music media on Feb 23rd. The Rock Hall will highlight stories, provide opportunities for dialogue, and reflect on the contributions and legacies of African American Artists.
That’s not all, The City of Cleveland joins the festivities with a robust schedule, offering spirit days, vendors, educational programs, and more! Cleveland State University adds to the celebration with many open-to-the-public programs throughout February and beyond.
Downtown Cleveland is not just celebrating Black History Month; it's creating an immersive experience, a tapestry of events weaving together the past, present, and future. Join the festivities, embrace the stories, and celebrate the invaluable contributions of the Black community that continue to shape our vibrant city.
