We Have Moved - Downtown Cleveland, Inc.’s New Downtown Digs
By Ian Meadows
Downtown Cleveland, Inc. has a new home in the heart of our city center! We’re excited to share that we have moved into a ground-level office space at 668 Euclid Avenue, Suite 101, relocating just down the street from our previous 3rd floor office at 1010 Euclid Ave.
This move is intentional, aligning with our organization’s collaborative, community-forward culture, our ongoing work to support Mayor Bibb’s Reimagining Downtown Cleveland Plan, and the implementation of our Downtown Retail Strategy priorities:
Activating a formerly vacant street-level commercial space, adding both visual and physical energy along downtown’s historic Euclid Avenue through signage and lighting, sightlines into the office from the sidewalk, pedestrian activity with our fully five-days-a-week, in-office staff, and more;
Demonstrating a commitment to having a strengthened visible public presence in downtown, complementing our Clean & Safe Ambassadors who are deployed throughout the core, seven days a week, all year long;
Providing a more collaborative, modern, and inspiring work environment for our staff to serve as innovative and committed place management leaders in downtown;
Locating us closer to Public Square, downtown’s central gathering space and civic hub, for which Downtown Cleveland, Inc. recently assumed full management, marketing, and programming responsibilities;
Continuing the legacy in the space we now occupy by honoring its storied past (keep reading to learn more) and creating new lasting impacts in our city’s core;
Plus so much more, as we find new and creative ways to engage with our downtown community and work to ensure downtown is a clean, safe, and welcoming place for all.
Continuing the Taylor Building’s Legacy
Our new office space has a rich history, dating back over a hundred years ago when it was part of the Taylor Arcade, an indoor mercantile connector lined with shops and businesses, similar to the existing 5th Street Arcades down the street.
The Taylor Arcade was built in 1907, in conjunction with the opening of the William Taylor Son & Co. Department Store in the rest of the building. Ultimately William Taylor Son & Co. expanded into the Taylor Arcade in the 1930s, and it was consequently remodeled and modernized to fit the needs of the department store.
Unfortunately, when the department store closed in 1961 and the building emptied, the Taylor Arcade was demolished as part of the building’s transformation into offices, which it remained for many years.
More recently in 2008, K&D Group purchased the Taylor Building and several adjoining properties to create the Residences at 668, which it remains to this day. Thanks to historic preservation tax credits, K&D renovated the building into residential apartments and restored the look of its historic façade back to what it originally resembled, since it had been previously modernized with 1960s-era yellow and black panels.
Several years ago, iHeart Media moved its offices into a large ground-level commercial space, and now Downtown Cleveland, Inc. is also excited to join them as a neighbor and call this building home, occupying the space in the building that formerly housed the Taylor Arcade. The retrofitted space once again features a glass skylight, and the structural layout provides glimpses and reminders of the celebrated Taylor Arcade.
With a rich history dating back to the grand era of downtown department stores and reflecting the renaissance and revitalization of our city center’s historic buildings, we are proud to carry this legacy forward while providing a contemporary use of this space to better serve our community. We look forward to continuing to get settled into our new home and for all the impactful work we will accomplish in our downtown Cleveland neighborhood!
