Outreach
Our team also includes full-time outreach specialists who perform a variety of services for our neighbors in need, including conducting wellness checks, providing transportation services, and obtaining government-issued documents.
We also work with social service agencies to connect individuals to housing, medical, and mental health treatment. Downtown Cleveland, Inc. is the only non-public safety entity authorized to transport individuals who choose to go to the Cuyahoga County Diversion Center.
Outreach workers are trained in engagement, conflict de-escalation, and naloxone (Narcan) administration. They regularly communicate with outreach teams across the country about best practices.
Advocacy
We advocate for policies and programs that improve the quality of life for all our neighbors, including those experiencing homelessness. Downtown Cleveland, Inc’s advocacy goals include:
Integrate social work and crisis mitigation into law enforcement’s approach to the unhoused population.
Address barriers to care and advocate for civic and nonprofit resources.
Preemptively seek solutions and opportunities to support the vulnerable and unsheltered population rather than being reactive to these issues.
Support programs and legislation that address short- and long-term solutions, including affordable housing development.
Educate the public, specifically downtown’s stakeholders, on the social and legal intricacies of homelessness.
SEEDS
In collaboration with Lutheran Metropolitan Ministries, Downtown Cleveland’s SEEDS program employs those relying on shelters with work enhancing the urban landscape Downtown. Participants learn professional landscaping skills that aid them in securing long-term employment and permanent housing. The goal is to transition them from the social services system altogether, all while beautifying Downtown Cleveland.
